Meet Teacher Gus - Guitar
Gus is a guitarist and music educator originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, who has been based in Calgary since 2015. He first came to Canada in 2010 to attend the jazz program at Capilano University. After graduating, Gus relocated to Calgary, where he established himself as a guitar teacher while becoming an active member of the city’s jazz community.
Over the years, Gus has performed in a wide range of settings, from solo guitar engagements to appearances with the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, as well as numerous collaborations spanning rock and folk projects. Teaching has remained central to his career, and he continues to prioritize music education alongside his performance work.
Before focusing primarily on jazz, Gus’s musical roots were grounded in rock and pop, and in Sweden he performed extensively in reggae, afrobeat, and hip hop projects. Between 2021 and 2024, he returned to Sweden, where he worked as a music teacher in the public school system and as a guitar and bass instructor in a private studio setting. Since returning to Calgary, he has resumed teaching while also recording and releasing his debut album under his own name, The Gus Moberg Travesty – Stray Bullet Navigation.
As an educator, Gus emphasizes strong musical foundations that empower students to create their own music. He encourages improvisation early in the learning process and focuses on “unlocking the guitar” beyond basic open-position chords. By introducing a variety of chord voicings, comping techniques, and approaches to solo guitar playing, he helps students see the instrument as a complete musical tool — even as a “one-person band.” At the same time, he incorporates rock riffs, solos, pop repertoire, and student-selected material to ensure lessons remain engaging, versatile, and musically well-rounded.
